"Hermosa Beach City Council OKs Clark Building renovation plans" (Daily Breeze)
The Clark Building is an existing multi-purpose facility on Valley Dr., a few blocks from the beach in Hermosa Beach and directly across the street from the Hermosa Valley Greenbelt. It is part of the park complex next to the Clark baseball fields, the Kelly basketball courts, and the Hermosa Beach Lawn Bowling Club. The building, a beloved community asset for decades, contains a ballroom, two storage rooms, two restrooms, and a commercial kitchen. It is used for banquets, club meetings, classes, birthday parties, and other events. The City retained Albert Group to renovate and modernize the 5,000 SF 1-story building. The Clark Building was originally built in 1936.
The existing ballroom and storage rooms have wood floors, smooth plaster walls, and plaster ceilings covered with sprayed on acoustic overcoat. The bathrooms have vinyl containing tile floors, smooth plaster walls and plaster ceilings. The kitchen has vinyl containing tile floors, smooth plaster walls and a T-bar acoustical ceiling. Large window and doors with motor operated transom windows above adorn the walls on the east and north walls of the ballroom. City Council approved a 1998 request reserving Clark Building for nonprofit, community, school or civic organization meetings and for private parties. The building has a raised wooden floor, cast in place concrete exterior walls, and sheathing covered heavy timber bolted truss roof structure all resting on concrete spread footings.
The scope of the renovation project includes: Accessibility upgrades. Accessibility upgrades within the building and accessility upgrades connecting the building to the site and parking across the street. Re-finish of all surfaces and re-flooring of the main ballroom/multi-use room with removable stages. Kitchen upgrades including new commercial appliances, fixtures, and equipment. Restrooms remodel and accessibility upgrades. Mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades. New heating and air-conditioning system. Acoustical design of the main room, including sound damping measures such as acoustic panels. New lighting throughout and outside the building. New A/V system, PA system in the main hall.
